2009 Spring Break Communications Camp

Twelve youth from metro Atlanta now have a stronger grip on the direction of their future, thanks to the tutelage earned during the Spring Break Communications Camp.  From April 6-10, participants were engaged in a curriculum that challenged their thought processes and stretched their imaginations to consider career options beyond high school.  The initiative also created a platform for the young people to prepare for their future aspirations before leaving high school.  "I've encountered so many young people who are 100% convinced that their best options are professional sports or entertainment," says Alonia Jernigan, Founder and Director of The Dream Institute, Inc.  "My job is to defy the myth that those are their only two options."  Jernigan's approach is to expose youth to other future opportunities, and then encourage them to express their life's dreams through the arts of public speaking and essay writing.  The Dream Institute's official curriculum is called "Brighter Horizons."
